Film screening: Ecumenopolis – City without Limits

Thursday June 20th @ 21.00 we screen Ecumenopolis, a documentary on Istanbul’s neoliberal urban transformation and its ecological, social and economic impacts.

Taksim Everywhere, Resistance Everywhere: We have in our June and July program three solidarity events for the uprisings in Turkey. The screening of Ecumenopolis is the first of them and introduces the background of the uprisings in Istanbul.
‘’Ecological limits have been surpassed. Economic limits have been surpassed. Population limits have been surpassed. Social cohesion has been lost. Here is the picture of neoliberal urbanism: Ecumenopolis. Ecumenopolis aims for a holistic approach to Istanbul, questioning not only the transformation, but the dynamics behind it as well. From demolished shantytowns to the tops of skyscrapers, from the depths of Marmaray to the alternative routes of the 3rd bridge, from real estate investors to urban opposition, the film will take us on a long journey in this city without limits.’’

Chain of Solidarity Events for the Uprisings in Turkey Taksim Everywhere, Resistance Everywhere

The ongoing uprisings in many cities in Turkey started with the peaceful protest against the demolition of Taksim Gezi Park, Istanbul. The violent police intervention into the protest could not stop masses to reclaim their park, their city and soon the protests spread to other cities in the country. Since then, millions across Turkey have contested the authoritarian police state calling the government to resign and reclaiming their right to difference and right to the city. Many have been arrested, killed or seriously injured and public squares were turned into war zones with the police using excessive power utilizing so called ‘non lethal’ chemical weapons like tear gas, pepper spray and plastic bullets that caused serious injuries including head traumas. Despite the disregard of the government and the violence of the police, the resistance continues.
There have been several solidarity actions and demonstrations all around the world. In solidarity with all comrades in Turkey, we present a chain of solidarity events to take place in different cities in the Netherlands. You are invited to come, talk and think together and to debate the ongoing uprisings in Istanbul and other cities.

Below there is a series of already planned events in Rotterdam, Utrecht and Amsterdam. Feel free to contribute and add your own event to the program to enlarge the chain of solidarity.

Planned Solidarity Events:

Infoavond, Uprising in Turkey: an eyewitness account
June 17, 19:30 – 22:00 @ Boekhandel de Rooie Rat, Oudegracht 65, Utrecht
The uprising in Turkey has surprised the world. Tens of thousands of people have risen against Islamic Neoliberal authoritarianism. And all of this while economically the country is doing very well by capitalist standards for more than a decade. So in order to understand this complex situation, some questions have to be answered: What is the origin of this uprising? What are the various forces of which this uprising is composed of? What are the demands? How can this uprising turn into a movement which can defy the current regime?
We try to make a start on answering these questions tonight. A student /activist from Turkey, just back from Istanbul will describe his experiences, and present a collection of video-interviews of protesters in Taksim Square. The presentation will be followed by a discussion about the roots of these protests, its development and the prospects for the future.

Vrijdag 14 juni, 22:00 Concertavond

Op de Valreep vindt aanstaande Vrijdag muzikale fijn proeverij uit Boston, Bratislava, Amsterdam, Leeuwarden en Sneek plaats: The Valreep invites you to an evening of musical finesse. We present you two bands which will make you wonder how much sound can be produced by a limited amount of people and will get your feet of the ground. By the end of the night you’ll be sweating your ass off. We are happy to present to you:

GONSOFUS, now based in Bratislava is recording and touring as a live-looping / live drums duo. Don’t be surprised when you find yourself dancing to the groove of a 7-piece ensemble but see only two people on stage! Reggae, rock, funk, afro-beat, latin, and many more musical and cultural backgrounds, as well as languages (English, Russian, Spanish), effortlessly blendend into the now signature GONSOFUS style.

Vrijdag 7 juni, 22:00 – 3:00

(English below)

Line-up:
Les croissant terrible (AMS)
James bar Bowen (UK)
DJ Eljo

ENGLISH:
De valreep ‘We are here ‘Benefit – the de –illegalized zone de Valreep!
The Valreep calls Friday upcoming the de –illegalized zone. We do this for all the illegalized people in the Netherlands. At the Valreep no one is Illegal. No person can be declared’illegal’. No policy, no law, no government, no individual can take away a person’s right to exist. Borders are arbitrary lines on the map of the world that are protected by laws and violence. No one flees home and family in search of a better life because it’s fun to do so. Most people have been risking their lives to get here. The Dutch (and European) asylum policies have proven to be unworkable, discriminatory and fatal. They have to be radically rewritten in a much more human way. Last Sunday, backed by the squatting Movement and the many volunteers, the refugees of the ‘we are here’ group have found new shelter in the office building ‘de Toorop’ in the West of Amsterdam. A lot needs to be done in order to make it inhabitable. Therefor we raise money with this benefit. Expect to be asked for donation at the entrance. Everything collected goes directly to support the group. Next to the necessary cause we especially love to have a good vibe evening, in order to celebrate life and take away the daily sorrows for a while.

This is the line up for the evening:
Les croissant Terrible (AMS)
James Bar Bowen (UK)
DJ Eljo

Hoopjam vanavond (donderdag 6-6) gaat niet door!
